So, why did we pick this neighborhood anyway? Well, Hilltop has quite an interesting story. Originally conceived by group of local Seattle architects back in the late 1940’s, it was one of the first housing cooperatives. The 60 acres, purchased for $250 per acre, covers a hill side east of Seattle in the suburb of Seattle. Each home positioned to take advantage of the views afforded the hilltop location. Most mid century enthusiasts in the Pacific Northwest will know of the neighborhood as many of the most prominent architects of the time not only designed homes in the neighborhood, but also called it home themselves. The original ethos of modern, humble homes and strong community have stood the test of time. There is a 5 acre park in the center of the neighborhood with a tennis court, swimming pool, fire pit, basketball court as well as large open field that acts as a meeting place for the daily dog runs. There is also a nice mile and a half trail that surrounds the community where you are almost always likely to bump into one of the neighbors. The amazing views are dependent on which part of the hill you live but can be Mt. Rainier to the south, Seattle to the West or Lake Sammamish to the north. The views are protected through well documented view corridors to limit conflicts between neighbors as the inevitable growth of the trees over the years slowly close in.

We are excited to have been able to pick up a home in the neighborhood as they don’t come up for sale very often. Though this home doesn’t have the strong MCM vernacular so common in other northwest homes it does have it’s own quirkiness and some really great bones. We’ll get into the designs soon so stay tuned.
